Digital trust becomes a growth constraint
Why cybersecurity, identity and information integrity increasingly shape whether companies can scale digital channels, AI and connected ecosystems.
Read articleImmersive technology should be judged by task transfer, not presence alone
Virtual, augmented and mixed reality create value when spatial interaction improves learning, design, remote assistance or execution. Immersion is a means, not the outcome. Begin with a task where spatial perception, embodied rehearsal or contextual overlay may reduce error, time, travel or risk. Screens remain superior when spatial information adds little and headset friction dominates.
Study the context. Field of view, tracking, latency, lighting, noise, gloves, movement, shared space and accessibility shape effectiveness. Information must appear at the moment and location needed without obscuring hazards or overloading attention. ISO 9241 human-centred design principles connect user needs, context, evaluation and avoidance of harm across the lifecycle.
Content fidelity should match the decision. Training requires scenarios, feedback and assessment that transfer to performance; design review requires scale, geometry and collaboration accuracy; remote guidance requires dependable alignment and communication. Photorealism may be unnecessary. Validate spatial registration, interaction, comfort and failure recovery with users and environments.
The operating case includes devices, content production, integration, sanitation, connectivity, support, updates and physical space. Pilots can hide fatigue and maintenance. Define session limits, safe boundaries, privacy for gaze and movement data, and a fallback when the device fails. Multi-user experiences also need identity, version and record controls.
Compare against the current task using completion time, error severity, knowledge retention, transfer, travel avoided, workload, comfort and support cost. Measure benefits after novelty fades and across the intended workforce. Immersive technology earns scale when spatial interaction produces a safer or better real-world outcomenot when participants simply report that the experience felt compelling.

The challenge is standardizing common engineering tasks while keeping platforms flexible enough for legitimate workload differences.
POV
Visual change matters only when structure, content and interaction make the site materially easier to navigate and use.
Adoption should follow a material workload constraint or economic advantage, not the prestige of using a newer computing model.
Strategic impact
Assessing governance, economics, interoperability and regulation helps organizations identify use cases with credible operating logic.
Defined priorities help align content, media and measurement around customer behavior rather than platform availability.
What we observe
Technically capable interfaces can fail when they disrupt routines, increase cognitive effort or conflict with real working conditions.
Traffic growth looks impressive until demand quality, search intent and contribution to meaningful customer journeys are examined.
